The Robert Garcia Interconnect is the first stage of a Caribbean-wide undersea electrical grid that will bring lower-cost, more reliable, and cleaner energy to the entire region. This first stage will focus on electrically connecting Puerto Rico with islands of Vieques, Culebra, and terminating at Saint Thomas. In doing so, it will create the ability to export lower-cost and more reliable electricity from Puerto Rico to these Islands thereby eliminating the need for more costly and less environmentally friendly generation. Additionally, a fiber optic cable providing low-cost and high-speed communications will be combined with electrical cable. A pipe that can export water from Puerto Rico is also being considered as part of this project.
